The Living Sea

There are waters so old they have their own memory. The Living Sea is one of these — no one is certain whether it was always conscious or whether consciousness accumulated the way sediment does, over ages and crossings and things that sank and were not retrieved.

What sailors say, when they say anything at all: it appears when the water is wrong. When corruption reaches the deep channels, when the cold layer beneath the warm shifts in a direction currents cannot explain. You do not summon it. It simply comes, and when it does, the horizon line flattens and the air smells of distance.

It does not fight so much as remember. Strike it and it returns exactly what you gave it, from the same angle, at the same speed, with a patience that suggests it has done this before — that it has done this many times, across many ages, against many things that thought the sea could be owned.
