Rethna of the Shallow Roads

A [Cartographer] of the Wandering People. Thirty-seven years on the road. Her maps are identifiable by a blue tint in the linen and are the most accurate record of passable coastline routes in the current crisis.

She does not have a fixed route. She has been walking for thirty-seven years, which she knows exactly because [True Scale] means she cannot misremember a distance she has walked. The current total is approximately nine hundred and forty kilometres of documented coastline, not counting interior passages.

Her maps are distinguishable by the blue tint the linen takes from the fixing solution she mixes herself. She does not put her name on the product. The people who know what to look for pay extra for the tint because it means the distances are accurate. A Rethna map showing two days of travel means two days of travel. Not approximately. Not under good conditions.

She prints in small editions — rarely more than ten copies of any route. Most of them end up carried by [Merchants] of the Wandering People, which means most of the useful information about what is passable and what is not moves with her output. She does not think of herself as infrastructure. Several situations in the last two years depended on it anyway.

There is one set of ruins she has mapped and has not published. She has been back twice since she first found them. There is no indication in her charts that the location exists. She has not decided what to do with what she found there, which is itself a decision, and she knows it.
